The greatest lie that I was made to believe while growing up in my village of origin is that rich people are misers as a matter of necessity. We had a term for them in my local dialect.
The tragedy of this misinformation was that we grew up despising money and wealth for we did not want to be branded as misers or ‘katili’ in Swahili. What I did not realise at the time is that these were stereotypes founded mostly on unmerited hatred for the rich people in my village by the poor.
There was no evidence for such accusations and their only crime was the refusal to dish out freebies any how. In our Kenyan case, the love for free things (without work) is legendary.
Social media is full of many cases of even private motorists stopping by accident scenes to plunder involved trucks if they were carrying edibles or foodstuff. In other cases, people rush to siphon the highly inflammable petroleum products from trucks at a very costly price.
Today, I understand money is a wonderful gift to humanity that makes daily choices much easier and enables owners to not only live a full life but also create memories that live long after they are gone.
In this article, I share why you MUST not be hard on yourself with money:
- As you look for money time passes too – simply put, life does not give you time to make money and then enjoy. Life happens as you earn your daily bread. Therefore, you must train yourself to have both at the same time –that’s simply how life is designed to be;
- We all look for money so that we may be able to live a good life – this requires you to become smart with your money. The thing here is to create baskets for your income and stick to them. For instance, create a basket for your mandatory savings, another for your luxury/huge expenditures like buying cars or furniture, another for your holiday and merry-making and education –children & self;
- Unlock the mystery of spending – the funny thing with money is that it does not go to tight-fisted owners. Spending your money and enjoying yourself as you move along is a clear signal to the universe that you have faith in its ability to supply your needs and desires. Thus, the heavens open for more as your faith grows in the abundance of the universe. Nobody knows why, but it is absolutely true;
- It affirms your financial discipline – the ability to balance your money among the many life needs and desires is the ultimate test of your financial mastery. The big boys and girls in the kingdom of money have their way on their own terms in life –this is how to prove yourself as cut from the finest metal there was during creation; and
- Life is beautiful and adventurous – you cannot afford to miss the different stages of life simply because you were busy chasing after money. Failure to explore the world at the right time will only reward you with an old rich man/woman full of regrets for missed opportunities to live life.
As we race into the 2nd quarter of 2023, I wish you a lovely Easter holiday.

Fantastic analysis of money as we stroll through life. Indeed it might be disastrous to pursue only one sphere of life- making money, only to realize our life’s ladder was leaning on the wrong building.
