Life can fly away within fleeting seconds. This past week, I lost not only a friend but my roommate in college. He was the only guy we shared a room for the entire duration I used shared rooms in college. As fate would have it, it all came to nought in a matter of seconds in a car crash. My sincere condolences to his family. It’s been tough for me, can only imagine how it feels for those who lived with him closely since we left college.
This has made me reflect deeply on how to make the best of the days that God remains gracious with us with the gift of life. In many ways, it all boils down to the moments, lives touched, love graciously shared and the kindness granted to others who may never have a way of repaying you back. Ultimately, people will only remember and treasure those small things that may never be paid with cash.
This is not to mean that money is not important in life. Far from it, I am a strong advocate of expanding your money and wealth horizons to the greatest extent that your imagination can go. The more you have it, the better. Money power grants you economic power, which in turn opens you to freedoms of choice on literary everything within the realms of humankind.
However, money must never be the consuming force that dictates your whole self and life. More important, money must bring blessing, honour and dignity to its owner, family, community and society in general. This is probably the true treasure of a rich and great life. So while you pursue the source and abundance of the kingdom of money and wealth, take time to make merry, be happy and a fountain of blessings to society.
Today, I share a few tips on how to find the fine balance between wealth and happiness:
- Do not labour too much thinking about money – I have heard of stories of people who miss sleep or time to rest because they were thinking, worrying or looking for money. There were days a long time ago when I did the same. If you are among them, you are still a baby in diapers on money matters. It is useless and a waste of precious time that can be used for other productive activities. Money and wealth MUST be a consequence of the things you love doing and your endeavour to make society and the world better;
- Create time to commune with your inner being – those who follow this page diligently would already be aware of the power of the subconscious mind. This is the most complex system God gave each one of us freely. It is your link to the physical world and things of the spiritual realms. During my 5:00 AM club exercises, I take a few minutes to ask for God and the universe to expand my tent, territory and influence. Shortly before I sleep, I take another minute to commission my subconscious mind to connect me with the wonderful opportunities the world has to offer while I sleep and retire from the days’ labour. Once that is done, I go about my life with no worry in the world. It works miracles!
- Take time to rejuvenate, relax and enjoy nature – I make it a point to take a walk every so often to enjoy the nature around me; I often relax outside to admire the blue skies during the day and the stars at night; I once in a while lie by the beach to admire the blue waters disappear into the horizons and watch ships disappear into the distance; sometimes I will just lay down on the grass thinking of nothing in particular. These things bring a sense of peace, and emotional balance and get you to appreciate the small precious things that count in life and that money cannot buy;
- Invest in self-improvement – I will never tire of asking you to read good books of diverse genres, write about things that you enjoy and love, go to a movie and travel. Every book you read and everywhere you go, is not just a destination but a memory you’ve created not only for yourself but those that you love, the community, society and the world;
- Start, grow and nurture a community for yourself – are you in a Chama, a ‘boys or girls’ club, do you make an appearance at events of family or close friends? Do you give to a credible charity or genuinely support someone in need without expecting anything from them? Do you give your talent back to your community and society? There is a level of companionship that money may never be able to buy you -invest, spend your time, money and wealth wisely.
