At the start of this year, I engaged a new gear for more outdoor rigorous events. For those that have read my book, you already know I have dedicated a Chapter on how your Health impacts your Wealth journey.
Taking this new adventure was not only to amplify this chapter, but also to explore Kenya’s beautiful sceneries that we often take for granted.
In the process, I had hoped to create lived memories and stories that I can tell my grandchildren someday. But alas, the tales of the mountains, the purity of nature out there in the wilderness, the long hours of uninterrupted thoughts on the trail, has not only brought me clarity, but also given me surprises.
Today, I share interesting perspectives on how life leaves some of us behind while it moves on.
1. My first long walk was a blind date with a group that had total strangers. The target was 38kms on January 18, 2025. As expected, this walk was shockingly over subscribed being within the lifespan of folks’ New year resolutions.
2. As expected, over 80% of the hikers of that day dropped out as soon as that walk was done – 6 months later, the active and consistent hikers of the group had averaged only 30 from over 150 in January. Mainly, the ones who’ve remained, are the ones who’ve been with the group all along – what we call in street parlor life members.
3. On January 18, when I showed up for the first time, I didn’t have any sporting or hiking gear. I showed up armed with 1.5 liters of water, my ID, Medical Insurance card & a few notes for snacks along the way.
4. I pulled through the 38kms, picked painful blisters from shoes stretched to the limits & aching muscles -but with a spirit of victory, a will to hang-on & a sense of resilience to take-on more challenges.
6. Six months later, I have been to many summits, enjoyed the tranquility of the wilderness and mountains, built valuable networks, enjoyed the simplicity of life, remembered our humble beginnings and explored the depths of my thoughts.
7. A primary lesson I have picked this past 6 months is that – while many desire great things, only a few will see the fulfilment of their dreams. As for me, all i do is just to show-up, the rest flows naturally.
Yet, this is the story of many folks, new year resolutions long abandoned -but life still moves on. For every small milestone achieved for the doers, it builds momentum; for every step left behind or abandoned, the gap opens wider for the doers against the absconders.
