Build Trust: It is the Currency of Money

Today, I shall focus on something that many people take casually when it comes to money. In this country, so many people would do anything just to squeeze money from someone or outrightly to con them.

Unfortunately, some of these things are disguised as social events that people need to fundraise. The amount of effort people put in to get a few coins from others undeservedly is sometimes amazing. All over, wherever you go, you’ll find folks who can work begging for handouts.

It is no wonder others are lining city streets as beggars, while in a real sense, they are normal people with the ability to work and earn their bread.

Many others borrow promising to re-pay a few days later, but in the real sense, they have no intention to pay back. Some have taken the con art too far by exploiting mobile-based loan apps where they borrow in many of them and change phone numbers not to pay. Some take huge loans in saccos and deliberately default for their guarantors to repay on their behalf.

This habit, which has been normalized in our society, flies against the very principle that governs money. By its very nature, money is based on trust. As I have said before, the currency of any nation derives its value from the trust that is guaranteed by the government of that country. Otherwise, it is just a piece of paper.

If this is true, then it means that if you desire money, then you must be in tandem with its basic underlying principle that guarantees its very existence.

Here are reasons why you must forget about money if you are not trustworthy:

  1. Economics and economies are built on trust – each economic system from which money is derived and circulated is primarily based on the trust and faith people place in it. There can be no money or trade unless there is trust in the economy. It is the blood that makes money freely flow and circulate to find its way to your pockets;
  2. Trust governs trade relations – the reason why you work for a whole month without pay until the end of the month is because you trust your employer and the business will pay you end month. The reason why a customer will buy from you is because they trust you to provide quality goods or services at fair prices. Why then would you imagine you could cheat the very system if you choose the path of being not trustable?
  3. Money honours only those who honour it – cheating for money can only go for so long. Even the most professional cons can only get away with a limited number of cheats before the system locks them out of their con games. For instance, the cons who started with mobile-based money like M-pesa haven’t taken long before most people discover their dirty tricks. I can bet today they can go for days before they get a victim. The same thing applies at work or in business. It won’t take long before the system catches up with you and before you know you’ve lost your job or customers and the money;
  4. Failure to honour debts will destroy your finances – never borrow money if you cannot pay it nor fail to repay on the date you promised. I see people casually promise to repay money ‘next week’ when in truth they know it won’t happen. So many times people fake emergencies that are not worthy simply to borrow money from friends, family or colleagues. If you genuinely have to borrow, then only promise to pay on the day you are sure you’ll be in a position to pay. The moment you fail to pay on that day, you erode your trust. If for whatever reason you cannot make the payment as promised, notify the person from whom you borrowed and when you can make the payment next. This is the most honourable thing to do if and when you borrow;
  5. Money faithfulness unlocks the forces of nature to bring more to your way – no one who is faithful with money who does not get more. It is similar to giving, those who give to worthy courses without expecting anything in return get more. Somehow being trusting with money opens the floodgates of the heavens to bring more to your way. If in doubt, show me anyone who has made serious money through cheating and conning others. Even those who succeed in the con games, eventually the money leaves them or their families as soon as they exit from the scene.
